South Korean convenience store chain Emart24 has recently announced a collaboration with local cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb to launch Bitcoin-themed “meal boxes”.
On May 9, Emart24 and Bithumb revealed that approximately 30,000 Bitcoin meal boxes priced at 5,900 Korean won ($4.30) each will be available at all Emart24 stores.
According to reports from local media, customers can receive 10,000 won worth of Bitcoin by downloading Bithumb’s app and entering the coupon code found inside each box.
Bithumb is also offering 20,000 won worth of Bitcoin for customers who create a Bitcoin account with NH Nonghyup bank and connect it to Bithumb. Those who already have an account must connect it to Bithumb to receive the additional Bitcoin.
Bithumb is a major cryptocurrency exchange in South Korea and a member of the Digital Asset Exchange Association (DAXA).
The platform also announced plans to become the first crypto exchange listed on the South Korean stock market, though its initial public offering has been delayed..
In South Korea, the newly elected democratic party has promised to support Bitcoin ETFs, with plans to submit a request after the National Assembly opens in June.
However, South Korea has been tightening regulations on the crypto industry in recent years. In 2024, legislators implemented stricter penalties for crypto-related crimes and introduced new guidelines for cryptocurrency exchanges. Financial regulators have also been cracking down on unlicensed exchanges operating in the country since late 2023.
