Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd has announced that its new line of smart TVs will support the purchasing of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). According to the company’s press release, the TVs will support an NFT app that will allow users to discover, purchase and trade original artwork through Neo QLED, MICRO LED, and The Frame.
The NFTs discovery comes as part of Samsung’s 2022 Smart TVs Smart Hub that seeks to make content curation and discovery seamless and based on user preferences. The hub will guide users to find their favourite content and discover other things that might be of interest. It will also support the ease of maneuvering from different categories like ambient, gaming hub and media.
Part of the company’s statement read, “With demand for NFTs on the rise, the need for a solution to today’s fragmented viewing and purchasing landscape has never been greater.”
Samsung is committed to introducing the first smart TV NFT explorer and market aggregator within the year. This would mean viewers would browse and trade NFTs from their screens. The company also assures users that the image quality of the NFTs will remain intact on the TV display. It incorporates a smart calibration feature that automatically adjusts display settings to the “creator’s preset values” ensuring the art has the true-to-the-original image quality. The feature operates similarly to the Dolby Vision or Netflix Calibrated Mode.
According to Samsung, the NFT platform will support creators to “share their art with the world” and let potential buyers preview the art before purchasing it. The platform will also let users learn about the NFT’s blockchain metadata and history.
The integration of NFTs into its TV lineup is Samsung’s latest foray into the metaverse world. The company has been actively pursuing various metaverse projects leading it to create its venture capital arm, Samsung Next. It has also been participating in the funding of blockchain NFT ventures like Nifty’s, the first vertically integrated social NFT platform.
More details on the Samsung TV NFTs platform will be available in the coming months as the company starts shipping devices.
Is Samsung forming a trend?
By integrating NFTs support in its gadgets, Samsung has become the first major TV manufacturer to support NFTs massively. Now, can this be the next trend in the smart TV world? Is it possible that other brands like Amazon Fire TV and Roku will join the same trend of NFT integration?
Well, that is not so far-fetched if the recent NFT development is anything to go by. NFTs started as part of the Ethereum network supported projects. They have since grown to become some of the leading blockchain applications ever.
The astronomic rise of NFTs within a short period is down to their several use cases. It has not only allowed for the tokenisation of digital artworks but also revolutionised other aspects like gaming, fashion and wearables and music. Multiple well-known brands and celebrities have since joined the NFT bandwagon, impacting its reach.
Samsung’s integration of NFTs shows that blockchain technology will increasingly become part of regular human life. Stay tuned as we cover all the developments coming up in the NFTs world.
