71% of voters oppose crypto donations
If its foundation complies with the requests of its community, Wikimedia may soon end its support for cryptocurrency donations.
According to one page on the website, 71% of 326 voters voted in favour of ending cryptocurrency donations.
Those who advocated for the abolition of cryptocurrency donations expressed concerns about the environmental impact of mining, as well as the implicit endorsement of cryptocurrencies.
Those in favour of cryptocurrency’s continued acceptance argued that proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies require little energy. It was also stated that cryptocurrencies provide “safer ways to donate and finance people in oppressive countries.”
The vote and request for comments on cryptocurrency donations started on January 10 and ended on April 12, roughly eight years after Wikimedia started accepting cryptocurrency in 2014.
The Wikimedia Foundation has not provided any official announcement regarding the result of the vote. It did, however, state that cryptocurrency accounts for a very small portion of its funding. It received $130,100 in cryptocurrency from 347 donors last year, accounting for only 0.08% of its revenue.
