A counterfeit application mimicking the decentralised finance platform Curve has surfaced on Apple’s App Store, as per a warning issued by developers on Feb. 14.
The cautionary note emphasised the absence of any official DeFi Curve app and urged users to be wary of potential scams. The fraudulent app, bearing the Curve logo, is attributed to MK Technology Co. Ltd, with its sole contact provided through a proton mail address on a Google Sites-hosted website. Although the app claims to offer services for managing borrowers and loans, it also features a gaming section, presenting classic and shuffle puzzle games. The legitimacy of the app remains uncertain, with suspicions raised about potential unauthorised usage of Curve Finance’s branding or intentions to exploit users’ wallet assets through in-app functionalities.
This incident adds to a series of counterfeit cryptocurrency applications plaguing platforms. Notably, Apple removed a malicious Trezor wallet app on June 21, 2023, which tricked users into disclosing their wallet seed phrases, enabling hackers to syphon off their cryptocurrency holdings. Likewise, Microsoft faced a similar challenge on Nov. 5, 2023, when it took down a fake Ledger app for the third time in two years, following significant financial losses totaling $588,000 across 38 transactions before its removal.
